Coincidences or connecting dots?
IRNA's reporting is reminiscent of Pravda during the 60s and 70s. Although there were reports in other media, there was no report in IRNA about the December 17th attempt on Ahmadinejad's life. In fact, there was very little reporting on the incident which occurred on a highway in Sistan and Baluchistan. It was reported by Jomhouri Islami newspaper:
"Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's motorcade was attacked Dec. 14 by "armed bandits and trouble-makers on the Zabol-Saravan highway" in the country's southeastern province of Sistan and Balochistan. According to Iranian government officials, one of Ahmadinejad's security guards and a locally hired driver died in the attack, and another security guard was injured. Two gunmen also reportedly died in the firefight. "

More recently, on IRNA's website, there's Wednesday a story about Ahmadinejad having to a trip to the Provinces because of heavy snow. It mentions that he returned safely to Tehran after air controllers closed the airport at Shahr-e-Kord requiring his plane to return to Tehran. There is another Friday story about his safe return to Tehran. There are Thursday stories -dateline Charmal-Bahktiari province- decrying the 'Zionist' bombing of the Samarra Shrine. There is a Friday story about his arriving in Lordegan and another about his successful trip:
- "At the end of a 3-day visit to Char-Mahal va Bakhtiari province, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad departed for Tehran Friday afternoon. The president arrived in Shahre-Kord, the capital of the province, on Wednesday evening and during his 3-day trip visited different cities and towns of the province. In the trip, the government approved 50 projects in its meetings in Shahre-Kord to promote developmental plans in the province."
What's really interesting about all this to me is that we had January tapes from UBL and Al Zawahiri warning of 'new attacks' - the President of Iran basically disappears for the first 10 days of February 'to participate in military planning exercises', then, we have the bombing of the Samarra shrine on Wednesday followed by the attack on the oil refinery and pipeline facilities in Abqaiq Saudi Arabia. Al Qaeda has claimed credit for both.
Additionally interesting are comments from Porter Goss (CIA head) in Time Magazine last June:
"Posted Sunday, Jun. 19, 2005New York – “I have an excellent idea of where (Osama bin Laden) is,” CIA director Porter Goss tells TIME in his first interview since becoming director of the CIA. When asked when Osama bin Laden will be captured, he says, “That is a question that goes far deeper than you know. In the chain that you need to successfully wrap up the war on terror, we have some weak links. And I find that until we strengthen all the links, we’re probably not going to be able to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice. We are making very good progress on it. But when you go to the very difficult question of dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you’re dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play. We have to find a way to work in a conventional world in unconventional ways that are acceptable to the international community.”
While he could easily be referring to Pakistan, I believe that his comments indicate a real possibility that UBL is in Iran.
Very scary.
